![]() ![]() The SDV virion is an icosahedral particle of diameter 26 nm, which contains a bipartite + ssRNA genome encapsidated by two CPs of 42 and 22 kDa. The virus has a wide host range including many woody and annual species. A symptomless host, China laurestine ( Viburnum odoratissimum), interplanted as a windbreak can facilitate SDV spread. The disease spreads slowly in orchards in concentric circles, and is suspected to be soil-borne by Olpidium or nematode. In summary, affected Satsuma mandarin trees have shortened internodes and are severely stunted with boat- or spoon-shaped leaves, significant yield losses, and malformed fruits. It has since been reported from Turkey, Korea, and China ( Azeri, 1973 Moon, 1986 Zhou et al., 1990). Satsuma dwarf was noted in the 1930s, and was confirmed to be caused by Satsuma dwarf virus (SDV) in Japan ( Yamada and Sawamura, 1952).
